Chapter Ten

“Is she still upstairs?” Alyssa tossed her heeled sandals onto the kitchen counter and claimed one of the stools by the island.

Drake poured another finger of Scotch and lifted the tumbler to his lips. “Yes.”

Alyssa’s shoulders slumped and she reached for the bottle. He slid a tumbler in her direction. She snagged it and poured a hefty amount. “Has she talked to you?”

“Once.” The aged Scotch made its way down his throat.

“And?” Alyssa sipped from her glass.

“She freaked out when I shifted before her.” He tossed back the contents of his glass, heedless of the strong alcohol burning his palate.

Alyssa set her glass down with a thump. “You didn’t!”

“How else could I convince her?” He slammed his tumbler onto the counter and cursed. “She’s been locked in her room for hours.”

“Oh, Drake.” Alyssa’s soft voice felt like a lash against his tender emotions. “It’s not your fault. I should’ve told her years ago.”

“No.” He lifted his gaze and pinned her with a searing look. “It’s forbidden. You did the best you could. We all did what was best.”

“She doesn’t understand. She’s not like Chase. Wolves adopted him. He grew up knowing the differences between us. Give her time.”

“Time?” He snorted. “She leaves for New Orleans right after the wedding. How am I supposed to convince her in four days?”

Alyssa frowned and slid off the stool to come stand beside him. “What exactly are we talking about here? How serious are you about Emma?”

He dropped his head, unable to put voice to the words.

“Oh, I see.” She touched his arm. “How long have you felt this way?”

“A while,” he murmured, unable to admit how long he’d wanted Emma.

“I had no idea. At least, not before a few days ago.” She moved her hand in comforting circles. “I’m sorry for this afternoon.”

He reached for her hand and grasped it. He lifted his chin to face her. “I’m sorry, too. For all of it. I shouldn’t have kept you in the dark about the Society.”

“No, you were right. I knew I risked banishment.” A tiny smile made her dimples appear. “But you know what? Chase is worth it.”

“I won’t allow you to be banished.”

She shook her head. “Don’t bother yourself about it. You have more important things to worry about, like how to convince Emma you’re not some kind of circus freak.”

“A freak? Really, Alyssa?”

“Well.” She shrugged. “To most humans, we probably would be.”

“Not Emma.” He spoke with conviction.

Horror hadn’t raced across her face, it had been true dismay. She probably couldn’t see a life with someone like him. Or had it been something more? Was the possibility that she wasn’t human either that abhorrent to her?

“So how do I make her understand that I’m not really all that different?”

His sister seemed shocked that he’d asked her opinion. “Honestly? I have no clue.”

“Have you noticed anything unusual about her lately?”

Alyssa seemed to ponder his question. “Not really. Why?”

“You’ll think I’m crazy.”

His sister laughed. “Trust me, after this week nothing seems crazy.”

“This is. I think Emma isn’t completely human.
